After a thrilling victory less than 24 hours ago, the Sacramento Republic have learned who their next opponents are in U.S. Open Cup.

Sacramento Republic FC will play hosts to fellow USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC in the third round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Republic were selected amongst three other teams to be in the West Region of the tournament, with other groups varying from four to six teams. Joining the Republic and Oakland is Monterey Bay F.C., and MLS side San Jose Earthquakes.

After being selected to host the third round matchup, Sacramento will also face a familiar opponent in Oakland. A new, yet, fiery rivalry, the squads have played each other seven times, fives of those meetings ending in a draw. Now set to compete in the most prestigious soccer tournament in the country, sparks are sure to fly.

The Indomitable Club advanced to the third round in dramatic fashion, coming back from two-nil down to beat amateur side Crossfire Redmond, 5-4, Wednesday night.

The Republic went on a historic run in last year’s competition, becoming the first non-MLS side to advance to the finals since 2008. Beating the likes of San Jose Earthquakes, LA Galaxy and Sporting KC to make it to there, Sacramento’s luck ran out at the end when they lost to Orlando City SC, 3-0.

And after underestimating their opponents on Wednesday, Sacramento will need to overcome the pressure left from 2022’s success.

“Yeah, I mean it’s a great competition. And I have a lot of respect for what these guys did last year, and what the fans expect us to do this year,” forward Russell Cicerone said post-match Wednesday. “So I definitely felt coming into that game that there was a pressure to get that result [and] go farther in this competition.”

A date and time for the Republic’s next cup match has not been announced yet, with the club providing a link to more information on their website.
