The San Francisco Giants made a trade for a pitcher Wednesday night, but not for a big name that has been attached to the team in recent rumors.
According to the team, the Giants sent right-handed pitcher Mauricio Llovera to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Marques Johnson.
Johnson, who will report to Class A San Jose Giants, was selected by Boston in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. In 28 appearances for the organization’s Single-A Salem Red Sox, the 23-year-old pitcher recorded a 6.55 ERA.

The MLB trade deadline is 3 p.m. PST, Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Earlier this week, a report came out from MLB Network’s Jon Morosi that the Giants are among several teams monitoring New York Mets pitcher Justin Verlander. The 40-year-old pitcher has a no-trade clause he would have to waive if New York were to trade him.
One pitcher the team will not acquire, at least not during the season, is Shohei Ohtani. Multiple outlets reported the Angels have pulled the two-way superstar from trade negotiations.
