The San Jose Sharks began their four-game road trip on a high note when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 to extend their opponent’s losing streak to nine.
The Flyers last win was back on November 9, when they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. They’ve since gone 0-4-5 including last night’s loss.
The Sharks, on the other hand, came off an exciting effort against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, leaving San Jose with a 4-0 win.
The team started off slow as Flyer’s captain Claude Giroux gave his team an early lead 48 seconds. Aaron Dell was between the pipes as goaltender Martin Jones rested due to injury.
Chris Tierney tied the game for the Sharks at 10:29. Joe Thornton followed up during a 5-on-3 power play with a goal of his own to give the Sharks the lead with under 2 minutes left in the first quarter.
The second period was plagued with penalties from both teams but neither scored on a power play. The Sharks did manage to extend the lead late in the period. Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s shot from the point gave San Jose a 3-1 lead and the final goal of the game.
Plenty of boos filled the Wells Fargo Center beginning in the second quarter. Chants of “Fire Hakstol” complimented the sounds.
Dell made 22 saves for the Sharks and Flyers’ Michael Neuvirth made 31. Logan Couture had two assists for San Jose
“The toughest game is always the first one,” Thorton said. “Three hours’ time change and you get here late, have dinner late, everything’s off. That first game is huge for us. Hopefully, we can pick some momentum up on this road trip.”
The Sharks will continue the road trip in Florida against the Panthers on Friday. The Panthers are currently 10-12-2. The Sharks are 13-8-2.
