A bad weekend in Los Angeles has turned into a nightmare scenario for the 49ers, now seeing Javon Hargrave go on ice for the rest of the 2024 season.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the star defensive tackle suffered a partial tear of his triceps and will likely be done for the year. After initially believing it it was a bruise postgame, tests revealed a more serious injury. A promising start to Year 2 in Red & Gold ends prematurely for the man known as “Gravedigger”.
“It’s a big one and I thought he had his best game yesterday. I thought he was a huge factor,” Shanahan said about Javon Hargrave, via conference call Monday. “Hargrave was a tough pill to swallow. We definitely haven’t had the [injury] luck that we did last year.”

Hargrave, 31, is in his second year with the 49ers, signing a four-year, $80 million deal during the 2023 offseason. A highly productive player with the Philadelphia Eagles, Hargrave has struggled to stay consistent since then. After a modest 2023 performance, the North Carolina native got off to a good start this season. He recorded hiss first sack of the year against the Rams.
In total, Javon Hargrave has racked up 380 combined tackles, 45.5 sacks and 79 quarterback hits in 130 regular-season games. He is a two-time Pro Bowler.
Additionally from Week 3, QB Brock Purdy has a sore back. While tests came back clean, he will be day-to-day entering Week 4.
Linebacker Dee Winters also re-aggravated his ankle injury in Week 3.
Meanwhile, running back Christian McCaffrey is in Germany to meet with specialists regarding his achilles tendinitis. “CMC” has been on injured reserve since Week 2, and has not played a down of football this season. His earliest return to football could be Week 5, but the 49ers will express caution with the reigning offensive player of the year.
On a positive note, Shanahan and the 49ers hope to have George Kittle return to practice this week. The star tight end is dealing with hamstring tightness, missing Week 3 as a result.
