When it rains it pours for the 49ers, now dealing with a very uncomfortable Trent Williams situation to open 2024 Training Camp.
The San Francisco 49ers’ star left tackle did not make an appearance on the practice field for Day 1 of Training Camp Wednesday. Instead, he’s holding out, with coach Kyle Shanahan confirming that Williams did not report to camp Tuesday. And yes, it is contract related.
The coach did not go into specifics on what the grievances are from the player, only that both sides are working towards a reworked deal as we speak.

“I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident it will all work out in the long run, and he’ll be here and we’ll get on the same page with everything,” Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday after practice.
Trent Williams, 36, has three years remaining on his current deal. But, there is no guaranteed money remaining, hence the exclusion from training camp at this time. The Texas native would earn a base salary of $20.05 million in 2024, holding a $31.5 million cap number for the 49ers.
Despite the lucrative number, Williams wants more guarantees, and the potential to push that number even higher in the short-term. Detroit Lions’ LT Penei Sewell inked a $27-million-annually extension this offseason. It would not be surprisng to see Williams demand a figure in the same ballpark.
Despite his unwillingness to report, both sides are expected to find common ground in the coming weeks. The player will be fined $50,000 per day he does not report, per CBA rules.
What’s the status on Brandon Aiyuk?
Besides Williams, Brandon Aiyuk’s contract saga is far from over.
The disgruntled wide receiver opted to hold-in for training camp, dismissing potential fines of $40k per day. Aiyuk is still not practicing until a new deal is reached however, seen watching training camp from the sidelines in a t-shirt and shorts Wednesday. After a few minutes, the player headed back into Levi’s Stadium, passing by media row while doing so.
Coach Kyle Shanahan cited neck and back soreness as to why Aiyuk did not participate on the field. But, w all know the real reasons for his hold-in.

“He’s going to stay out of practice, which is obviously a ‘hold in.’ It’s what we expected,” Shanahan shared. “I understand the situation fully.”
