Surprise, surprise: The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of names that could be heading to Las Vegas at the beginning of February.
The NFL released their 2022 Pro Bowl rosters Wednesday for both the NFC and AFC. On the former’s side, six San Francisco 49ers made the cut, including left tackle Trent Williams, linebacker Fred Warner, and tight end George Kittle among others. Seven players from the Red & Gold also made the alternates list, including running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga also made the list, a first appearance for the hard-hitting DB. In 14 games, Hufanga has 75 tackles, eight pass break-ups, four interceptions, two sacks and two forced fumbles. He also returned one of those INTs to the house in Week 4 against the LA Rams.
Staying on the defensive side, defensive end Nick Bosa has made his second consecutive appearance on the list, and his third in his four-year career. The likely defensive player of the year, Bosa has 15.5 sacks on the season, ahead of the pack in the entire league. He also ranks at the top of most pass-rushing metrics, including pressures and quarterback hits.
The biggest snub this season is the exclusion of fellow LB Dre Greenlaw. The Arkansas standout is in the midst of a career season, racking up 111 tackles through 13 games played, the most on the NFL’s premier defense. The organization, and Warner alike, have been pounding the table for Greenlaw to get the recognition he deserves. Sadly, it won’t come in 2022, not even on the alternates list.
McCaffrey is also a surprise to see not on the actual list, spearheading the Red & Gold’s elite rushing attack since joining the team in Week 7. He was knocked out by RBs Tony Pollard, Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders. Featured in every game this season, CMC has amassed 1,578 all-purpose yards and 11 total TDs.
Missing the last few years due to various injuries, his status as the ultimate dual threat player seems to have been diminished considerably.
