The former home of the Sacramento Kings is slowly coming down.
Sleep Train Arena, also formerly known as Arco Arena, is set to be torn down by this fall, sources tell Sactown Sports 1140. The demolition is a phased process, starting with the interior first before moving outside.
The demolition process began earlier this summer. The Kings played their last game at the Natomas arena on April 9, 2016. The following season, the team moved downtown to the Golden 1 Center.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sleep Train Arena was used as a temporary field hospital to help treat patients battling the coronavirus. In June 2021, the Kings donated the arena, and 35 acres of land, to California Northstate University. The site will eventually become a teaching hospital and medical school. The project was originally proposed for Elk Grove before landing in Natomas.
