With training camp starting up in less than a week, the 49ers received some good news Tuesday as Jimmy Garoppolo’s recovery seems to be on the right track, according to reports.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Jimmy G recently had a checkup with Dr. Neal ElAttrache regarding recovery on his throwing shoulder after undergoing surgery in March. The QB is reportedly progressing well and the expectation is that he will be fully cleared around mid-August, according to sources close to Garoppolo’s camp.
The latest report comes after Garoppolo had reportedly been throwing for several weeks while recovering in Los Angeles, a point Rapoport emphasized yesterday on NFL Network.
Jimmy G has been throwing for several weeks. The focus will be not on making one deep throw but on making many in a row to hold up to the rigors of a game or in a practice. That’s what full clearance would mean. The belief is the cuff will end up stronger than before. https://t.co/n1tySCgSEm

“Jimmy G has been throwing for several weeks. The focus will be not on making one deep throw but on making many in a row to hold up to the rigors of a game or in a practice. That’s what full clearance would mean. The belief is the cuff will end up stronger than before,” the NFL Insider tweeted out Tuesday.
Additionally, any potential trade talks surrounding the veteran signal-caller will be put on hold until the QB has shown he can progress through all throws over the next month. Arm fatigue has been a topic of conversation for the 49ers this offseason as Trey lance has come under fire over concerns of his arm’s endurance on the field.
It looks as though Jimmy G can also be added to that list.
“It’s not just about making all the throws. It’s about making all the throws, then doing it again, doing it again, and be able to withstand the rigors of a practice, and/or potential a game. That is why mid-august is essentially the day he’ll be fully cleared,” Rapoport said Wednesday.
The Athletic’s David Lombardi hammered home that point Wednesday, agreeing that any Garoppolo decision will come after the QB has demonstrated arm endurance.
Rapoport continues to emphasize that any Jimmy Garoppolo decision/movement — trade him, release him, keep him — won’t come from the 49ers until after he demonstrates that his arm endurance is fully back and he’s fully cleared (mid-August) https://t.co/daASmTexx4

Jimmy G is on the books for $26.95 million in the final year of his contract. However, that money is not guarantee until the 53-man roster is set, giving the 49ers time to make a decision on their starting quarterback.
