Trey Lance was all smiles when talking about his predecessor Jimmy Garoppolo Thursday, excited have him back for another season in the Bay Area.

“I’m super excited just to have him in the room. Another guy again who’s done it, got to watch him do it last year, got to learn a ton from him and I’m gonna continue to learn as much as I can from him. You know, take all the advice that he’s got for me this year,” Lance said post-practice Thursday.

Garoppolo and the 49ers front office came to an agreement on a restructured contract Monday, a move that while Lance wasn’t a part of, still feels no trepidation about with the former starter now behind him in the depth chart.

“No, no, not at all. I was super excited. Like I said man, he’s done it. And for him, I mean, I’m gonna use him as a huge resource for me throughout this whole entire year. And I know he’s gonna always be willing to help me out. So I’m super excited for it,” Lance said.

And while there is language in Jimmy G’s new deal for him to gain back funds if he sees the field this season, the message is crystal clear: this is Trey’s team going forward.

“Just that nothing changes,” Lance said regarding his conversation with head coach Kyle Shanahan. “Just, like I said, makes the QB room all that much better. Another great resource for me, a guy that’s played this offense, a guy that’s done it, who’s played a lot of ball… my mindset on it is just Jimmys’ gonna be a huge resource for me, as he always has been since draft day.”

Lance later broke down how the conversation went between the two after the news broke that Jimmy G would be sticking around. Speaking on the phone the same night and then chatting it up at his locker the next day, nothing changed between these two.

“We talked the night that the news broke just on the phone. We texted and then I saw him in the morning, you know that next morning we had practice, so came in, we talked at his locker for a little bit. I mean, it was all love, nothing’s changed between us. Man, I can say it a million times but he’s been my big bro and nothing’s gonna change there,” Lance said with a big smile.

Time will tell if that’s true but from the looks of it, the two quarterbacks are happy to continue working together in San Francisco.
