New Sacramento Republic FC stadium to be built as 20,000-seat venue

The new Sacramento Republic FC stadium is taking a major leap forward, and with it, the vision for downtown Sacramento is expanding in a way the region hasn’t seen in decades.

In partnership with Wilton Rancheria, what was once planned as a smaller, phased project has now transformed into a bold, 20,000-plus-seat, soccer-first venue at the Railyards—one designed from day one to meet the full scale of Sacramento’s passion for the sport and its growing demand for world-class entertainment.

Republic FC managing partner Kevin Nagle made it clear during his appearance on The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross that this moment is bigger than just a stadium.

“This is a monumental day for Sacramento, the region. We’re going to change it. You’re witnessing it,” Nagle said. “It will be transformative to Sacramento–far greater than soccer.”

That transformation begins with Republic Stadium, a 17-acre, 500,000-square-foot development that will anchor a multi-billion-dollar investment in the downtown Railyards and help create an entirely new neighborhood filled with housing, retail, and hospitality.

Originally expected to seat around 12,000 fans, with future expansion, the new Sacramento Republic FC stadium will instead open at full capacity, accommodating more than 20,000 supporters and expandable to 27,000 for major events.

“It just became obvious to us at a certain point that we had to go bigger,” Nagle explained.

“There was a convergence of demand… we needed to build it bigger and build it better.” That demand stretches well beyond soccer, with the venue expected to host concerts, championship games, and other large-scale events that Sacramento has historically lacked.

The design reflects that ambition. A signature overhead canopy—featuring four massive trusses weighing 3,800 tons—will cover every seat, delivering both shade and a distinct addition to the Sacramento skyline.

“People are going to feel like they’re right on the pitch,” Nagle said. “That allows you to have a roof that’s got a lot of cover… so the sun is just not blaring you.”

Combined with open-air architecture, perforated cladding, and natural airflow, the stadium is built specifically for Sacramento’s climate, allowing fans to enjoy the Delta breeze during warm summer nights.

Fan experience is at the center of the project. The new Sacramento Republic FC stadium will feature more than 20 different seating options, including safe-standing sections for supporters, premium suites, and a dedicated supporters’ plaza designed to amplify matchday atmosphere.

“We’re going to build… a state-of-the-art 20,000-seat stadium,” Nagle said. “We will have first-class amenities. This will not be a Class B stadium.”

A five-story seating bowl will create an intense, enclosed environment, placing fans as close to the action as league rules allow.

Construction is already underway, and the project remains on track to open in 2028, marking a permanent home for Sacramento Republic FC and a new hub sports and entertainment in the Sacramento area.

But beyond the steel, seating, and skyline, Nagle emphasized the bigger picture: “A decade from now, you are going to see something almost not recognizable when you look at it today.”

As Nagle puts it, the new Sacramento Republic FC stadium isn’t just a venue—it’s the catalyst for reshaping Sacramento’s future.
