A new basketball team, a Golden State WNBA franchise, is coming to Northern California starting in 2025. On the day of the 2024 regular season opener, the league released the planned team name and logo: Golden State Valkyries.

With a name correlated to their NBA companion (Golden State Warriors), the team outlined the logic of the chosen Valkyries team name.

“Originating from Norse mythology, Valkyries are a host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering – flying through air and sea alike. This brand is Golden State’s modern interpretation of Valkyries: strong, bold, and fierce.” – Golden State Valkyries Press Release (5/14/24)

The logo has many details that pay homage to the team’s location in the Bay Area.

“Communities own sports teams, so it’s only fitting that as we embarked on the brand identity development process, we really listened to the fans and selected a name that they wanted,” said Chin. “Through surveys and social media, the name that continued to come up the most, by far, was Valkyries. Once we completed a rigorous process to examine and approve the name, we worked around the clock to build the supporting brand elements that our players and fans alike would be proud to represent.”

According to the release, the new team “already surpassed 7,500 season ticket deposits for the team’s inaugural season.” The Valkyries are the first WNBA expansion team since 2008.

Sacramento fans may notice the primary color choice after the Monarchs disbanded in 2009. With conversations about continued expansion in the near future, it’s unclear how the addition of the newest Golden State WNBA team could affect the chances of their potential return.
