The NFL has made a worthwhile attempt at cracking down on players betting on league games the last year, handing out more sanctions Thursday.

The league announced that three players have been handed indefinite suspensions for violating the NFL’s gambling policy last season. Those indicted include Indianapolis Colts Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry, and free agent Demetrius Taylor. All players allegedly gambled on NFL games during the 2022-23 season and will be eligible for reinstatement after next season.

The Colts have released both Rodgers and Berry as consequences for their actions.

“We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said in an team statement Thursday. “The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization we will continue to educate our players, coaches, and staff on the policies in place and the significant consequences that may occur with violations.”

The NFL also announced that Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere has been suspended for six games for betting on non-NFL sports at the club’s facility. The OL gave a statement to ESPN, apologizing for his actions.

This is the second time this offseason the league office has issued suspensions for violating the gambling policy, with Detroit Lions handed either six-game or indefinite suspensions earlier this year. Among that list was wideouts Jameson Williams and Quintez Cephus.

The NFL began cracking down on sports betting following the 2021-22 season, when WR Calvin Ridley was suspended indefinitely for gambling on NFL games. The player has since been reinstated, and traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.
