Tanner Roark picked up the win in his Athletics debut as Oakland sweeps St. Louis

In his first game as an Oakland Athletic, Tanner Roark spun a one-run gem as the A’s completed the two game sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Oakland has now won six of their last seven contests and improved to a season-best 16 games over the .500 mark.

Roark struck out six batters over five innings of work on Sunday, only allowing one run on a solo home run from Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong in the fourth inning. The one-run performance is the 32 year-old’s best start since June 26th when he gave up one run over 5.1 innings with the Cincinnati Reds.

Jurickson Profar his his 15th home run of the year, while Marcus Semien and newly-acquired catcher Dustin Garneau picked up two hits each in the winning effort. Garneau was claimed off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels and made an impact in his first game as an Athletic, giving Oakland a 2-1 lead on a two-RBI double in the fourth inning.

The A’s will be back in action on Monday night in Chicago when they face the Chicago Cubs at the “Friendly Confines” of Wrigley Field.

Game 1: Saturday, August 3 – A’s 8, Cardinals 3

Mike Fiers won his eighth consecutive start on Saturday, pitching 5.2 innings of one-run ball en route to an 8-3 win for Oakland.

The 34 year-old picked up his 10th win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.46, further solidifying himself as the ace of the Athletics pitching staff.

Fiers has not lost a game since May 1st in Boston.

Chad Pinder hit a pinch-hit three-run home run in the bottom of the eight inning to give Oakland a commanding 8-2 lead. It was Pinder’s 10th home run of the season, who is now five long-balls away from tying his career-high. Mark Canha, Stephen Piscotty and Marcus Semien all picked up two hits each in the Athletics’ fifth win over their last six games.
