If the San Francisco Giants want to firmly plant themselves in the National League Wild Card race, they will need to take care of the lighter part of their schedule.

Tuesday night in Detroit was an ideal start to that notion.

Carlos Rodón struck out 10 or more batters for a second-straight start, Evan Longoria blasted his 12th home run of the season, and the Giants picked up a 3-1 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park. With the win, San Francisco picked up a game on the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card standings after the Cleveland Guardians secured a 3-1 win of their own at Petco Park.

Rodón (12-6) struck out 10 Tigers batters while allowing just five hits (no walks) and one run over seven innings pitched to lower his ERA to 2.81 on the year.

The left-hander’s eight double-digit strikeout games are the most by a Giant since former two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum also did it eight times in both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. With one more double-digit strikeout game, Rodón will tie a franchise record shared by Lincecum (2008) and Jason Schmidt, who struck out 10 batters on nine occasions during the 2004 season.

“He’s a beast,” Giants catcher Austin Wynns said of Rodón following Tuesday’s win. “He goes about his business every day. He’s professional, he has a good routine, and when we cross those lines we’re on the same page.”

Although Rodón’s performance was another jewel of an outing for the 29-year-old, the veteran lefty made it clear that the numbers are nice, but the wins are what he cares about most as San Francisco attempts to erase a 5.5 game deficit in the Wild Card race over the next five weeks.

“There’s another baseball game tomorrow,” Rodón told reporters in Detroit. “It’s going to be one of those things where it’s a day-to-day thing. Hopefully, we look up at the end and we’ve made the playoffs.”

The Giants will finish a two-game set against Detroit at 10:10 am PST on Wednesday before traveling to Minnesota for a weekend series against the Minnesota Twins.
