If there’s one thing that the San Francisco Giants and Minnesota Twins have in common, it’s that both teams are fighting for their postseason lives.

San Francisco (61-62) will begin a three-game set against the Twins (62-61) at Target Field in Minneapolis as both teams look to cut into their five-game deficits in the race for Wild Card spots.

Entering play on Friday, the Giants sat 5.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the third and final National League Wild Card spot with 39 games to go. Minnesota is currently looking to catch the first-place Cleveland Guardians, who hold a four-game lead in the American League Central.

The Wild Card is also in play for the Twins, but the Seattle Mariners currently hold a five-game lead and have shown no signs of slowing down. This weekend’s three-game set between these two teams is important because, let’s face it, every game remaining on the schedule is a big one for teams that are hoping to punch their tickets to October.

Following a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, the Giants fell flat during a 6-1 loss during the series finale on Wednesday afternoon. Logan Webb had his worst outing of the season, allowing six runs on five hits while walking three batters over 4.2 innings of work–the right-hander’s second-straight outing having pitched less than five frames.

Following this weekend’s series in Minnesota, the Giants will begin their most important stretch of the season in the form of a six-game home-stand at Oracle Park:

  • Monday, August 29–Wednesday, August 31 vs San Diego Padres (currently 5.5 games ahead of SF in Wild Card)
  • Friday, September 2–Sunday, September 4 vs Philadelphia Phillies (currently 8.0 games ahead of SF in Wild Card)

It all starts tonight in Minnesota. Be sure to stay locked into Sactown Sports 1140 for all of your San Francisco Giants coverage as the orange and black attempt to push their way into October.
