The Jimmy Garoppolo saga is over folks.

The San Francisco 49ers and former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a restructured one-year deal to keep him in the Bay Area Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal, reported to be $6.5 million guaranteed, also includes incentives and no trade clauses that allows the QB to recoup some money if starter Trey Lance is hurt or benched.

“He has another total of $500k in roster bonuses. He also has playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9M. So, one year, $7M, up to just shy of $16M,” Schefter tweeted out Monday. “The contract contains no-trade and no-tag clauses, assuring Garoppolo will remain in SF this season and have the freedom to leave in 2023.”

The move makes him the highest paid backup in the NFL while giving quality and proven insurance if their second-year prospect struggles in the regular season.

Garoppolo was entering the final year of five-year, $137.5 million deal, having a cap hit of over $25 million for the 2022 season.

San Francisco and Garoppolo had seemingly been heading for a divorce after the team fell to their divisional rival, Los Angeles Rams, in the NFC conference championship earlier this year. The move seemed almost certain after Garoppolo delivered a potential farewell speech at his exit press conference last season.

“Faithful, thank you very much for everything,” Garoppolo said in February. “It’s been crazy, man. Just all the comebacks at Levi’s, comebacks on the road, ups and downs, it’s been a hell of a ride, guys. I love you guys. See ya.”

However, any trades were halted by the quarterback after having offseason shoulder surgery in his throwing arm, rising concerns for potential suitors. The 49ers kept the former starting signal-caller away from team meetings and practice during training camp, instead opting to go through his offseason program as he rehabs his surgically-repaired shoulder. Garoppolo didn’t even have a playbook for the preseason.

That no longer remains the case, according to Schefter.

“49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo had been working since last week on a reworked deal to keep him in SF this season. In the end, this is what made the most sense for both sides. It always was possible it could play out this way, with Garoppolo returning, and now it officially has,” Schefter said.
