Following a franchise-record 107-win season, 2022 certainly wasn’t the encore performance that the San Francisco Giants hoped for.

After dropping Saturday’s game to the Colorado Rockies, the Giants have been eliminated from postseason contention.

For the fifth time over the past six seasons, San Francisco will be watching the playoffs from home.

Entering Spring Training, expectations were high for the Giants after an impressive 2021 season that included the team’s first National League West title since 2012. Free agent signings Carlos Rodón and Joc Pederson joined a roster that included loads of talent, both in the batter’s box and on the mound.

Rodón and Pederson both went on to make the National League All-Star team this summer, but the rest of the Giants roster couldn’t seem to find their 2021 form.

After finishing fourth in last year’s MVP voting, Brandon Crawford mightily regressed in 2022. Brandon Belt, Evan Longoria, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Tommy La Stella all dealt with injuries. Outside of Rodón and Logan Webb, the starting rotation was unimpressive.

With Belt, Longoria, Rodón, and Pederson set to hit free agency, Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi will have some financial flexibility to upgrade this roster.

Bringing back Rodón and Bay Area native Pederson are likely to be at the top of Zaidi’s list, but what San Francisco needs more than anything is a big splash. The Giants need a star.

Linden product Aaron Judge will enter free agency this winter after what should be an MVP season, as the current New York Yankees outfielder has mashed 60+ home runs and is making a push for the American League Triple Crown.

While it may be hard to outbid the mighty Yankees, San Francisco should throw its hat into the ring and make a competitive offer for Judge, a player that grew up a massive Giants fan while growing up in the Bay Area.
