The Oakland Athletics will begin to study the Coliseum and Howard Terminal as potential sites, after the Oakland City Council approved an “exclusive negotiating agreement” on Tuesday night, per Mercy News.

The Council and the A’s have an agreement to negotiate for over the next nine months on a potential locations for the new stadium.

The city can extend the negotiations for an additional three months, if President Dave Kaval studies the Coliseum to be a good fit.

The Coliseum is a favored site for the Athletics due to its proximity to the BART, Interstate 880 and the Oakland International Airport.

Last month, the A’s and Port of Oakland agreed to study Howard Terminal, which would still require an environmental review and does have access issues.

Both sites are ‘parallel paths’ to keep the team in Oakland, according to Kaval.

Back in March, Kaval wrote a letter to Mayor Libby Schaaf offering to pay $135M to own the complex. Amanda County is considering to sell it’s share of the complex to the City of Oakland.

The city expects a community benefits package as part of a new Coliseum ballpark, including open space, transportation infrastructure programs, affordable housing and jobs for local residents, as part of the “exclusive negotiating agreement.”

Kaval is confident that the Athletics will announce a new stadium location by the end of this year.
