Doug Christie’s contract situation is drawing attention as the Sacramento Kings try to develop their young players and reshape the roster.
Christie is in the final guaranteed year of his deal, with a team option for 2027-28, but The Athletic’s Sam Amick said the team’s injuries factor into how the coach’s performance is evaluated.
Amick joined Sactown Sports’ The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross to share his latest Kings intel. While he acknowledged league chatter about Christie’s job security, Amick said his understanding was that Sacramento is weighing the team’s context, including how many players have been unavailable.
“The messaging that I received was that the injuries have got to be taken into consideration, and they are taken into consideration,” Amick said.

Amick pointed to Ben Simmons, Keegan Murray, Dylan Cardwell and Maxime Raynaud as players whose absences have affected the roster. Simmons was expected to contribute before his season-ending injury, while Cardwell and Raynaud could have helped at positions where the Kings have needed more depth.
For now, Amick said, he has not heard that Doug Christie’s job is in immediate danger. But he cautioned that the situation could change if circumstances shift, such as a poor stretch or frustration within the locker room.
“You kind of jumped into the 0-and-7 scenario,” Amick told the hosts. “I don’t know exactly what the mood would be if that actually happens.”
The Kings’ challenge is not limited to the coach. Amick said the front office is also managing veteran players who may not be part of the team’s long-term plans, while trying to give Darius Acuff Jr. room to develop.

He said the Kings appear open to listening when other teams call, with Acuff the one player he believes Sacramento is unwilling to discuss.
That puts Doug Christie in a difficult spot: balancing development, established players and expectations for a team in transition. Amick said Sacramento has support in place to help maintain the locker room, including general manager Scott Perry and B.J. Armstrong, who he has heard has a strong relationship with Acuff.
The team’s record will continue to shape the conversation, but Amick’s reporting suggests injuries are a central part of how the Kings are assessing Doug Christie.
With the guaranteed portion of his contract ending after this season and a team option for 2027-28, the coming months could help determine whether Sacramento sees him as part of its next phase.
