It’s not often an NFL team names a captain with only a handful of games left in the season. But the Las Vegas Raiders are bucking tradition.

While speaking to the media Friday morning, coach Josh McDaniels said the team’s captains approached him about adding running back Josh Jacobs to the captain group.

“He didn’t have a full offseason, but through his leadership, his commitment, his effort, his unselfishness, his willingness to do whatever is asked to help the team win, and I’d say his recovery, his rehab, his ability to stay out there on the field and do that,” McDaniels said. ” Our captains mandated that Josh Jacobs join them. So he will be a captain moving forward and I’m proud of them for doing that.”

Jacobs now joins Davante Adams, Derek Carr, AJ Cole, Maxx Crosby, Duron Harmon, Mack Hollins, Kolton Miller and Denzel Perryman as captains of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Josh Jacobs has earned the title, setting personal and team records while running roughshod over the competition. With four games left in the season, Jacobs currently leads the NFL in rushing yards with 1,402. If he rushes for more than 98 yards this Sunday against the New England Patriots, he’ll reach 1,500 rushing yards for the season and become one of only five players in the last 10 seasons to rush for 1,500 yards and record over 10 touchdowns.
