Another player with writing on the wall, safety Jimmie Ward is leaving the 49ers.

Reports surfaced Monday evening that Ward would be signing with the Houston Texans for 2023, reuniting him with head coach DeMeco Ryans. The deal is expected to be 2 years, $13 million, likely placing the versatile DB back in the safety position.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first with the news.

Ward, 31, was the 49ers’ longest-tenured player on the roster, drafted by the team in 2014. Playing nine seasons and 115 games in Red & Gold, Ward’s veteran presence was a key foundation for the organization.

Last season was a bit usual for Ward, suffering a significant hamstring injury in the preseason. Missing five regular season games, Ward was thrust into the nickel-back position thanks to the play of Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson. Playing out of position in 2022, the veteran DB was still productive, racking up 50 combined tackles, five passes defended and three INTs.

After doing his part for the team last season, Jimmie Ward was hoping to cash in this offseason. While the safety would have loved a longer contract, joining Ryans’ & the new-look Texans gives him a chance to show out in the AFC South.

Ward hinted at an exit from San Francisco on an Instagram Live in February, stating he would keep his options open, but that he would be going to the best fit for him next season.

“Whatever decision I’m gonna make, I think it’s gonna be the best team. Obviously, it’s gonna have to do [somewhat] with the finances obviously, but I’m gonna choose the best team. Hopefully, it’s with the 49ers but if it’s not, I got much love for y’all, respect y’all and I appreciate y’all for giving me a warm welcome since I’ve been out here, looking out for me and helping me out along the way,” Ward said.
