The 49ers have locked down another key position prior to the start of free agency, re-signing safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. Sunday.

Reports surfaced that the veteran defensive back had agreed to terms with San Francisco on a one-year deal to remain with the 49ers for the 2023 season. The deal is reportedly around the $2.9 million range, keeping Gipson in the Red & Gold secondary for the time being.

Ari Meirov was first with the report, confirmed by 49ers sources thereafter.

Signed off the waiver wire at the end of training camp last season, Gipson never relinquished his spot, creating a one-two punch combo with S Talanoa Hufanga that served for 20 games in 2022. Playing almost every snap, Gipson finished with 61 combined tackles, eight passes defended and five INTs. He ended 2022 with a solid 67.2 Pro Football Focus grade.

His impact stemmed beyond the production, helping Hufanga grow into an elite strong safety in such a short time. The third-year player received his first Pro Bowl & All-Pro nods last season, thanking his man “Gip” for the help along the way.

“Man, that’s my dog,” Hufanga told Sactown Sports prior to the end of last season. “Like first and foremost, like just the relationship we built off the field has definitely helped it on the field. He came in here with the humble mindset and I think that’s when you got two guys that are willing to just work with each other and want the best out of each other. It’s not a competition. A lot of guys are like, ‘No, I want this man’. He was the most humble dude I’ve ever met that came into the building and was like, ‘What are your goals?’ And nobody really talks to me like that. I mean, everybody sees it as like ‘I got to start in front of this guy or I want more picks than you’, nah. ‘Gip’ is the ultimate team dude, a great guy.”

Now back together for another season, San Francisco can focus on other areas of need in the coming weeks, including fellow DB Jimmie Ward.
