Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins tore his ACL Thursday, likely ending his 2023 season before it even began.

Hoskins, who was selected in the fifth round in the 2014 MLB draft out of Sacramento State, was attempting to make a catch in the second inning of a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers when he went down with a non-contact injury.

In a press release, the team said the tear was to the left knee and will require surgery.

According to Todd Zolecki, Phillies beat writer for MLB.com, Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski said Friday Hoskins will get a second opinion.

The Phillies are already expected to miss Bryce Harper until around the All-Star break.

Since debuting for the Phillies in 2017, the 30-year-old Sacramento native has hit 148 home runs, with a steady batting average of .242 and an on-base percentage of .353. In last season’s playoff run, Hoskins hit six home runs. The Phillies eventually lost in the World Series to the Houston Astros.
