Some more good news from the 49ers Thursday, as quarterback Brock Purdy is on schedule to begin throwing next month.

San Francisco 49ers’ general manager John Lynch made an appearance on KNBR Thursday morning, providing as update on Purdy’s recovery from surgery in March. While the QB can’t start throwing until 12 weeks post-operation, his appearance and work ethic during offseason workouts has been encouraging to say the least.

“So Brock’s here working with his teammates, they’re in phase two. He’s not out there throwing yet, that’s gonna happen around week 12, [that’s] kind of the next inflection point,” Lynch said on KNBR Thursday. “But he’s doing really good, doing everything that he can do, that’s just Brock’s personality, and it’s great to see him out here every day. All our players are back here and working and really attacking it, they’re excited for what’s to come and so are we.”

The plan was always for Purdy to resume throwing around the 12-week mark, but obviously setbacks can happen. That is not the case however, with Brock shedding his external arm brace weeks ago, even sharing high-fives with spectators at an SF Giants’ game last month.

While it’s small glimmers of hope, the prognosis remains that Purdy will be fully cleared to practice by the end of training camp.

“I just got a report from the trainers,” Lynch added. “So week 12, that’s where he can actually go out, start lobbing a football. And according to the surgeon, you start getting a little better read on exactly where he’s at right about then.”

The news Thursday is in wake of the 49ers signing Brandon Allen to be the team’s tertiary option at the position over the summer. And while many expect Purdy to be ready to go by Week 1 of the 2023 regular season, the 49ers are being cautiously optimistic in their approach.

“He’s doing well and I think you just take it day-by-day. It’s cliche, but it’s the best thing you can do. And he’s done a great job of doing that,” Lynch stated.

Brock Purdy underwent a repair of his right ulnar collateral ligament in March, an injury sustained on the first series of the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Now about nine weeks removed for surgery, all signs point to a full return for the former Mr. Irrelevant early next season.
