At long last, the San Francisco 49ers have found their fourth quarterback in journeyman Brandon Allen.
Reports surfaced Wednesday morning that the 49ers and Allen had come to terms on a deal to play for the Red & Gold next season. While the contract details have not been released, it is expected to be a veteran-minimum contract. After looking to draft another QB in the draft, San Francisco instead opts for the veteran Allen to join the team’s young QB room.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was first with the news, as local media confirmed thereafter.

Brandon Allen, 30, is entering his fifth season in the NFL in 2023. The Arkansas alum has spent there last three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, helping star QB Joe Burrow reach his potential in Ohio. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Only featuring in only 15 regular-season games in his career, Allen has a record of 2-7 as the starter. He has thrown for 1611 passing yards, ten total touchdowns and six interceptions in the NFL.
Allen will now serve as the tertiary option during the 49ers’ offseason, behind QBs Sam Darnold and Trey Lance. Brock Purdy, the team’s presumed starter, is in the early stages of recovery from UCL surgery on March 10th. Expected to be on the mend for six months, the former Mr. Irrelevant could be back at practice right around the start of the 2023 regular season.
