Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that the league and its 30 teams will commemorate the third annual Lou Gehrig Day today, Friday, June 2nd.

Each of the 30 MLB teams will collectively raise awareness and research funds for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, during Friday night’s full slate of games.

All players, managers, and coaches will wear a special “Lou Gehrig Day” patch on their uniforms.

In addition to traditional ballpark activities, teams will honor MLB researcher and analyst Sarah Langs in every broadcast booth during games on Friday and raise money for the Healey & AMG Center for ALS through autographed bats signed by players who Langs selected.

Langs will also throw the ceremonial first pitch at the New York Mets vs. Toronto Blue Jays game at Citi Field on Lou Gehrig Day.

To learn more about Sarah Langs’ ALS journey, you can read her write-up for ESPN that was published on Friday morning.

About Lou Gehrig Day

Lou Gehrig Day, held annually on June 2nd, marks the day Gehrig became the starting first baseman for the New York Yankees, marking the beginning of his incredible streak of consecutive games played (2,130).

The date is also remembered as the day Gehrig passed from complications of ALS.

Through Lou Gehrig Day, MLB will celebrate the groups and individuals who have led in the pursuit of cures, honor those who are bravely living with ALS, and remember all those whose lives have been lost to this disease.
