Tuesday’s NFL roster cutdowns saw the 49ers narrow their active roster to 53 players but at the expense of a few other standouts.

The San Francisco 49ers cut their roster by more than 30 players Tuesday, making some questionable calls along the way. Because of that, they have lost three training camp standouts to waiver claims.

Those players include Center Keith Ismael (Cardinals), guard/tackle Ilm Manning (Cardinals) and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison (Panthers). All three have shown flashes in the preseason, with the latter making the biggest case for a roster spot.

Jamison was an undrafted rookie free agent, signing with SF after the 2023 NFL draft. The University of Texas alum had impressed many all summer, including defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Seen as a punt-return specialist and a defensive back, Jamison made an appealing case for the 53-man roster.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, losing out to veteran CBs Isiaiah Oliver and Ambry Thomas on Tuesday.

On the offensive side of the football, Manning was the biggest surprise cut on Tuesday.

The UDFA from Hawaii has shown serious potential in both training camp and preseason play. Mainly working with the third team, Manning was steady in protection in all three exhibition opponents. His performances weren’t enough to make the main roster, however, losing to veteran G Nick Zakelj in the end.

Both Manning and Keith Ismael will look to continue their development in Arizona.

The 49ers’ luck wasn’t all bad though, retaining a number of key practice squad players from last season. The biggest name reportedly being CB Qwuantrezz Knight, a versatile member of the secondary. The UCLA alum spent most of last season injured on the sidelines, just now coming into form for the 49ers. Other names include defensive tackles T.Y. McGill and Marlon Davidson, both having strong performances in August.

San Francisco has also reportedly signed former Green Bay Packers CB Shemar Jean-Charles to the practice squad Wednesday.

With 16 slots available on the practice squad, the 49ers have time to re-add key members of the team’s depth chart.
