After much consideration over the last few days, the 49ers have trimmed their roster down to 53 men for the opening day of the 2023 season.
The San Francisco 49ers have announced their several moves to get the roster to 53 Tuesday, including placing four players on the injured reserve list. Those include: Kicker Zane Gonzalez, safety Taylor Hawkins, tight end Cameron Latu, cornerback A.J. Parker. All players will miss the entire 2023 season, already out with injuries.
Additionally, rookie CB Darrell Luter Jr. is going on the physically unable to perform list (PUP), and will miss the first four gams of the regular season. He has missed all of the preseason with a knee injury.

Moving forward, the players released by the 49ers include nine players in total. Of those nine, defensive linemen Kerry Hyder Jr., T.Y. McGill and Austin Bryant were surprise cuts, all playing well in the preseason, However, San Francisco expects to re-sign both Bryant and Hyder Wednesday, after moving players to the IR.
All personnel released Tuesday can be signed by another team immediately.
The players waived is the biggest cutdown of all, with 18 men let go by the 49ers here. Of those players, offensive lineman Ilm Manning and CB D’Shawn Jamison were surprises, both standing out in training camp & preseason play. The 49ers will hope to add both men back to the practice squad this week, but will have to see if they clear waivers first.
Other surprise waives were linebacker Marcelino McCray-Ball and DLs Alex Barrett and Marlon Davidson.
San Francisco also had a few surprises to make the 53-man roster Tuesday, including all rookies from the 2023 draft class. While guys like Luter and Latu will miss extended time, it’s apparent that the Red & Gold feel good about their young prospects at this time. Other rookie standouts include LBs Jalen Graham and Dee Winters, both flashing in preseason play.
Another rookie standout has ben wide receiver Ronnie Bell, cementing his standing due to stellar play and other injuries.
Additionally, star pass rusher Nick Bosa has been placed on the reserve/did not report list Tuesday. Bosa, 25, has been absent from the 49ers this month, holding out for a massive contract extension. Those talks have lingered on, with many speculating that he could miss Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
