The San Francisco Giants have started making offseason moves.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Giants have picked up starting pitcher Alex Cobb’s $10 million option for the 2024 season.

Cobb, 36, was named to the MLB All-Star team for the first time in his career during an overall impressive 2023 that saw the right-hander post the Giants’ third-highest wins-above-average rating (2.6).

About SF Giants pitcher Alex Cobb

San Francisco signed Cobb to a two-year deal (that included a club option for 2024) before the 2022 season, and the veteran has been a solid addition to the pitching staff thus far.

After posting a 7-8 record to go along with a 3.73 ERA and a career-high 151 strikeouts in 2022, Cobb raised his game to another level in 2023 by making the All-Star team for the first time in his 12-year career.

Cobb was a force in the Giants’ rotation to start the year, as the righty posted a 6-2 record and 2.91 ERA during the first half of the season.

Although Cobb was a staple in San Francisco’s rotation to start the year, a hip injury reared its ugly head down the final stretch, and the Giants were forced to shut the All-Star down in September.

Cobb finished the year on a sour note, going 1-5 with a 5.25 ERA in the second half before being placed on the injured list on September 20th due to a hip impingement issue.

The veteran is expected to miss all of Spring Training and the start of the 2024 season as he recovers from hip surgery, but you can bank on Cobb playing a role in San Francisco’s 2024 season.

Cobb’s return highlights an eventful 24 hours for the Giants as pitcher Sean Manaea opted out of his contract and will enter free agency, which is set to begin on Monday for all MLB teams.

Manaea posted a 2.61 ERA over his final 14 appearances to raise his free agency stock after starting the year with a 5.86 ERA into late July.
