Now the that offseason is officially underway for Major League Baseball, the rumor mill is beginning to gain steam as we get closer to the Winter Meetings.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, several teams have emerged as potential destinations for New York Mets slugging first baseman Pete Alonso if a trade takes shape this winter.

One of those possible destinations, per Bowden, is the San Francisco Giants.

We’ll have to see if the Mets and Alonso make any progress on an extension. [Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns], who was officially introduced right after the regular season, wants to put his stamp on the team.

[Stearns] is open to Alonso trade discussions and Alonso extension discussions. The Cubs, Mariners and Giants have been rumored as possible destinations if Alonso is traded.

Is Pete Alonso a fit for San Francisco?

While it remains to be seen if New York will move their All-Star first baseman, the deep-pocketed Mets could be in the market for some big free agents this winter following an incredibly disappointing 2023 season.

Extension talks haven’t gone anywhere between Alonso and the Mets thus far, and with super-agent Scott Boras representing the soon-to-be 29-year-old, it’s looking increasingly likely that the three-time All-Star will hit the free agent market next fall.

The Giants are in the market for a star, and Alonso would bring power to a San Francisco franchise that has yet to have a hitter finish a season with 30+ home runs since Barry Bonds in 2004.

Alonso is coming off a 46-homer campaign in 2023 that also saw the slugger drive in 118 runs over 154 games. Although his batting average dropped from .271 in 2022 to .217, there is little doubt that Alonso is one of baseball’s premier power bats and would be a great addition to a team like the Giants.

Over the past five seasons, Alonso has finished with 37 or more home runs four times, with the COVID-shortened 2020 season being the lone exception.

While extension talks have stalled thus far between the Mets and Alonso, there is still a chance that New York locks in a long-term deal to keep the ‘Polar Bear’ in Queens long-term, but anything and everything is on the table with Boras involved.
