LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 21: A view shows the Las Vegas Strip behind the site that the Oakland Athletics agreed in principle to purchase from Red Rock Resorts Inc. for a potential new ballpark on April 21, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The A's President Dave Kaval said the deal for the 49-acre plot of land, formerly the home of Wild Wild West Gambling Hall & Hotel, could be used to relocate the Major League Baseball franchise from Oakland to Las Vegas. The team will now work on a public-private partnership to build a USD 1.5 billion, 30,000-to-35,000-seat, partially retractable-roof stadium in time for the 2027 season. New renderings of the A’s Las Vegas ballpark are expected to be released next week.

According to multiple reports from local news outlets in Las Vegas, A’s owner John Fisher will present the new renderings with Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.

Renderings were released earlier this year, showing a stadium with a retractable dome at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.

But, two months later, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the A’s director of design Brad Schrock instructed design firms to “wad those up.” If those reports are accurate, then MLB owners unanimously approved the team’s relocation from Oakland to Las Vegas this offseason without knowing what the team’s stadium could look like.

The team plans to build a $1.5 billion, nine-acre stadium with around 33,000 seats. The ballpark and organization were granted $380 in public funding for construction earlier this year. But, the earliest projections for when the stadium could open is not until 2028, three years after the A’s lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires after the 2024 season.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the A’s are “expected to play in a variety of sites after their Oakland Coliseum lease expires after the 2024 season, including at the Giants’ ballpark in San Francisco and Summerlin, Nevada, the A’s Triple-A site.”

And if owner John Fisher tries to sell the team after the move for a huge profit, Nightengale says owners added a stipulation that Fisher would ” be heavily taxed on the sale.”
