The San Francisco 49ers nominated defensive lineman Arik Armstead as their 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year.

This is the fourth consecutive year Armstead has been nominated for the award.

All 32 teams nominate a player who “excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact beyond the game.” Winners will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 8. All nominees will receive a $55,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

“The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award is the league’s most prestigious honor given annually to the player who best represents the greatness and compassion of Walter Payton on and off the field,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release. “These 32 outstanding men are making a valuable difference in their communities every day and we are proud to celebrate their special gifts and humanitarianism.”

As the 49ers’ nominee, Arik Armstead will wear a special Walter Payton decal on his helmet for the remainder of the 2023 NFL season.

“I want to use my blessing to bless others, I feel like it’s my responsibility,” Armstead said in a press release. “When it’s all said and done, I want to leave this earth a better place than when I was born. I think that’s what we should all strive to do.”

When he’s not on the field, the 30-year-old defender has collaborated with educators in his hometown of Sacramento through the Arik Armstead Foundation, “to provide elementary youth in need of comprehensive academic support with targeted reading interventions by credentialed teachers.”
