After being awarded third-team All-NBA honors last season, Domantas Sabonis has increased his production in 2023-24.

The three-time All-Star averages 20.1 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game on 60.1 percent shooting in his 35.1 minutes per night.

That’s a career-high in points and rebounds while tying his career-best in assists. Not to mention, he’s leading the entire NBA in rebounds, and his highly efficient conversion rate slightly trails last season’s 61.5 percent.

He joins Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid as the only players currently averaging at least 20 points, ten rebounds, and six assists per night — Embiid (1) and Jokic (2) have won all three of the most recent MVPs between them.

Thirty-two double-doubles for Sabonis place him one ahead of Jokic’s second-place tally, but Denver’s big has the slight edge in triple-doubles with 11 to Sabonis’s nine. Luka Doncic (6), Giannis Antetokounmpo (4), LeBron James (2), Scottie Barnes (2), and Emiid (2) are the only others with multiple on the year — elite company.

Most recently, Domantas Sabonis tore apart the Detroit Pistons Tuesday night. Yes, it’s a team with a now 3-34 record, but that should not detract from his stellar production — 37 points (season-high), 13 assists (ties season-high), and ten rebounds on a highly efficient 16/21 from the field.

Domantas Sabonis was asked by Kyle Draper postgame about his team’s 82 points in the paint, which primarily were produced by himself.

“If they would have tagged the role or they would have stopped me early I would have just kicked it out to avoid shots,” he said. “Every day, it’s a different scout, so we just make reads.”

Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun was recently awarded Western Conference Player of the Month for January. Still, Domantas Sabonis had a strong case yet was not listed as a nominee — although De’Aaron Fox was.

Sacramento has come out with lackluster energy for a handful of their last games, but their starting center has been consistent outside of a few nights, which happens to the best of them. Most of their offense runs through him, with countless dribble-handoffs and off-ball cuts rewarded by his exceptional passing ability.

Head coach Mike Brown has complimented Sabonis’s improved defensive rotations and verticality while protecting the rim. While he’s still far from a remarkable defender, there’s been progress that inches him closer to his ceiling on that end at 6’10.

So, while Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis have also managed stellar production this season, Domantas Sabonis continues to strengthen his case for making another All-Star team and (potentially) his second consecutive All-NBA appearance.

The recognition is bound to continue trending upwards if the Kings can continue to string some wins together and climb the Western Conference standings.

When is the next Sacramento Kings game?

Sacramento will play its second game in as many days on Wednesday when they complete the back-to-back against the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center.

The Kings will hope to avenge last week’s disappointing loss to Charlotte, which saw Sacramento fumble a late lead en route to being outscored 10-0 during the final 90 seconds. Thanks to 34 points from Terry Rozier, the Hornets claimed a 111-104 win.
