The San Francisco 49ers are losing another member of their coaching staff.

According to multiple reports, the Washington Commanders are hiring Anthony Lynn as their run-game coordinator. The team has not yet announced the move.

The Commanders already poached a member of the 49ers’ front office when they hired Adam Peters as their new general manager. Peters was the 49ers assistant general manager from 2021-23.

Earlier this week, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Las Vegas Raiders have hired James Cregg as their new offensive line coach. The team has not yet announced the addition. Cregg comes from the San Francisco 49ers where he was an assistant offensive line coach.

Anthony Lynn is reportedly close with new Washington coach Dan Quinn and Peters, ESPN Adam Schefter wrote.

With San Francisco, Lynn was also the team’s assistant head coach. He joined the 49ers in 2022 after previously being with the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator.

As a player, the former running back spent time with the 49ers, New York Giants and Denver Broncos, where he won two Super Bowls. When he picked up the clipboard, he bounced around the league, serving various offensive positions with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets. He served as head coach of the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-2020, leading the Bolts to a  33-31 record and going 1-1 in the postseason.

After reporting the Lynn news, Schefter added that the Commanders are expected to hire San Francisco’s assistant defensive line coach Darryl Tapp as Washington’s new defensive line coach.

Key offseason dates for the 49ers

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20th – Teams can begin franchising players until Tuesday, March 5th
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27 – NFL Combine begins
  • Thursday, March 13 – The 2024 free agency signing period begins at 1 p.m. PST
