The 49ers may be in playoff mode, but one of their own, Adam Peters, is off to greener pastures at the moment.
Former San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters has officially joined the Washington Commanders for his new role as GM. Peters arrived in the DMV area Monday night, getting to work with his new organization immediately. Washington and Peters will hold an introductory press conference Tuesday at 2 PM EST to welcome the prominent front office member.
Peters signed a five-year deal with the Commanders to become their new GM, a position previously held by former 49ers executive Martin Mayhew. The new GM will now be tasked with turning around a franchise devoid of postseason success since 2006.

“I am incredibly grateful to Josh Harris and the Washington Commanders ownership group for this once in a lifetime opportunity,” Peters said after the deal became official over the weekend. “My family and I are thrilled for the chance to be a part of the DMV community and look forward to connecting with such a storied, passionate Commanders’ fan base.”
The former 49ers executive also made sure to thank his former employer, looking to take the success of the 49ers and blend it into Washington’s bedrock.
“I am eternally grateful to the York family, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and the entire 49ers organization for an amazing experience,” he continued. “Throughout my career in the NFL, I’ve learned that successful organizations begin with a strong ownership group willing to commit the resources needed to foster a culture of winning. We have that here in Washington and it’s my responsibility and privilege to carry out the mission of delivering a team that will ultimately compete for Super Bowls. I know how much the Commanders mean to our fans, our owners, the legends who paved the way for this franchise, and the NFL. The work starts now.”
Adam Peters joined the 49ers organization in 2017, working his way up from vice president of player personnel to the right-hand man of General Manager John Lynch. Prior to his time in San Francisco, he also spent time with the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, winning Super Bowls with both organizations.
He will now be tasked with revitalizing a franchise that has been a laughing stock for many years. But with new ownership in place, a positive outlook is on the horizon for many fans in the DMV area.
Peters and the Commanders’ brass will begin swiftly looking through candidates for their next head coach, already zeroing in on a few hot names on the market.
