With recently acquired starter and former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray already on the shelf until July, the San Francisco Giants’ rotation has taken another hit.

Rookie right-hander Keaton Winn, who is currently projected to be the number-four starter in Bob Melvin’s rotation, will be shut down for at least the next four to five days before resuming throwing as he deals with right elbow inflammation.

An MRI conducted earlier in the week revealed no structural damage, meaning that there is a chance that the 26-year-old will be able to return to the rotation before Opening Day on March 28th.

“We’re still trying to formulate some opinions on where we go,” Melvin said when asked about Winn’s timetable.

Winn, a fifth-round pick by San Francisco in 2018, posted a 1-3 record and 4.68 ERA while striking out 35 batters over 42.1 innings pitched over nine games (five starts) for the Giants in 2023.

Giants show interest in Jordan Montgomery

As the questions surrounding the San Francisco rotation begin to mount, one has to wonder if team president Farhan Zaidi is in the market for one of the remaining star talents on the market–reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and World Series champion Jordan Montgomery.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Giants are one of several teams showing interest in Montgomery, who is reportedly in the market for a deal that will exceed $150 million.

It’s unknown if Zaidi will break the bank again after signing Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year, $113 million deal, slugging All-Star designated hitter Jorge Soler to a three-year, $42 million pact, and bullpen-arm-turned-starter Jordan Hicks to a two-year, $44 million contract, but it’s clear that San Francisco will need some assurances behind Logan Webb in the rotation.

As of February 23rd, this is how the Giants’ rotation looks with Winn sidelined (per FanGraphs):

  1. Logan Webb
  2. Kyle Harrison
  3. Jordan Hicks
  4. Triston Beck
  5. TBD

Injured List: Alex Cobb (hip surgery), Robbie Ray (Tommy John surgery)
