After a long few months, the moment has finally come for the Sacramento Republic to march on to potential glory in 2024.
Sacramento Republic FC open their 2024 USL Championship campaign at home Saturday, facing west coast rival Orange County SC. Saturday’s clash will make it 27 times the two foes have faced off, with 18 of the 26 previous decided by one score or less. Last season, Orange County got the better of Sacramento, sweeping the season series.
However, the Republic got the last laugh, finishing first in the USL Championship western conference standings in 2023. Orange County finished second.
Sacramento would go to the conference finals last season, falling narrowly short to Phoenix Rising, 2-1. The Republic had the game in hand, but a disastrous 10-minute second half spell doomed the Quails from another final. Now facing two years of disappointment, the Republic are looking to make amends in 2024.

“I think we have to take in those experiences and learn from those experiences, understand that we’re right there. But, in order to lift silverware, you have to remain focused for 95, 100 minutes, whatever it is,” Republic coach Mark Briggs said. “And I feel we’ve lost our focus in critical moments. So, we have to learn from that.
“But now it’s about being present. The past is the past. We’ve got to learn from the past, but we’ve just got to be present. We’ve got to be here every day. And when you’re present every day, it gives you a platform to move forward and have success.”
The Sacramento Republic will look to kickoff 2024 on the right note, with the Heart Health Park crowd behind them this weekend.
