Sunday Night Football In Week 17 Has Been Canceled By The NFL

The final Sunday Night Football game of the season will not air on NBC and is canceled. But don’t worry, there is a reason behind it.

This coming Sunday is New Year’s Eve and according to CNN, New Year’s Eve is when very few Americans actually watch television, so having Sunday Night Football wouldn’t be too good for rating.

The last time the NFL held a Sunday night football game on New Year’s Eve was in 2007, with the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, and even then only 13.4 million people watched that game.

This year has been a rough for the NFL’s rating seeing as it has gone down 9 percent since last year.

13.4 million is about a quarter fewer than the average Sunday Night Football game ratings in the 2007 season.

Howard Katz, the NFL’s broadcasting chief, has released a statement on the matter:

“We felt that both from a competitive standpoint and from a fan perspective, the most fair thing to do is to schedule all Week 17 games in either the 1 p.m. or 4:25 p.m. windows.”

All of Sunday’s games will be broadcasted on CBS or Fox.

The NFL, hasn’t yet announced which teams would play Sunday night, but there is a chance of that the teams playing have no playoff implications at all.

NBC won’t have a game this coming week, and NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy declined to comment about whether the network would be compensated for the lost broadcast.
