DeMar DeRozan passes Allen Iverson on all-time scoring list (29th)

With 24 points in Sunday's win over Washington, DeMar DeRozan passed Allen Iverson to become 29th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

DeMar DeRozan is a certified bucket. There’s no denying that and no greater proof exists than his status as top-30 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and climbing.

With his made-field goal in the final seconds of the second quarter against the Washington Wizards, he surpassed Allen Iverson for 29th.

DeRozan ended the night with 24 points, taking his career total to 24,379 points compared to Iverson’s 24,368.

The only other active players ranking higher are Stephen Curry (24,446 – 28th), Russell Westbrook (25,760 – 21st), James Harden (26,738), Kevin Durant (29,796 – 8th), and LeBron James (41,355 – 1st).

While DeMar DeRozan doesn’t have an MVP under his belt like the rest of that list, every retired player who’s recorded more career points than him is currently in the Hall of Fame.

After Sunday’s 123-100 win over the Wizards, the Sacramento Kings interim head coach started his postgame press conference by acknowledging the guard’s accomplishment.

“Congratulations to DeMar for getting 29th all-time in the NBA in scoring,” he said. “That’s special. If you pass Allen Iverson in anything, you’re doing something. To my man, much respect. DeMar is what a pro is all about.”

DeRozan has averaged at least 20 points for the last 12 seasons (including 24-25 with the Kings) of his 16-year career, never playing in less than 60 games in a single season.

If he can record at least 1,500 this season and the two following remaining on the deal he signed with Sacramento this offseason, he could climb into the top 15 of the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Given that the guard has reached that mark in nine of his last 11 seasons, it’s a reasonable projection for the future Hall of Famer and certified hooper.

Domantas Sabonis, amid the best season of his NBA career, had his jersey retired by his college alum Friday afternoon.

He’s the sixth player in Gonzaga’s history to have their number retired, joining rank Burgess, John Stockton, Adam Morrison, Kelly Olynyk, and Dan Dickau.

Sabonis missed Sacramento’s team practice Friday to attend the ceremony but rejoined the team for their 123-100 home win over the Washington Wizards on Sunday night.

The three-time All-Star recorded a game-high 29 points and a game-high 18 rebounds and was asked postgame if Friday’s jersey retirement factored into his stellar performance.

“You know I’m going to come out and fight every game, but it was awesome,” Domantas Sabonis said postgame. “A lot of great emotions. I saw a lot of people that I love. So, it was definitely a great day.”
