Friday was one of the hottest days of the summer, but the heat did not slow down No. 8 UC Davis football as the Aggies wrapped up 2025 fall camp with a nearly three-hour scrimmage at UC Davis Health Stadium to conclude 15 practices over the past two and a half weeks.
UC Davis football spent the previous weeks welcoming new faces while maintaining a relatively healthy camp. Each day was a competitive one, as no job was settled at the star,t and some jobs are still open for an Aggie to take.
“We had a really good camp and feel excited about where we stand,” said head coach Tim Plough. “It really felt like we were able to get a lot of evaluation done because it was such a competitive camp. And I feel like we did a good job coming out of camp relatively healthy, which is always a good thing.”

The Aggies now set their eyes on preparation for the 2025 season opener against No. 11 Mercer with the next week of practice acting as a dry run for game weeks during the season.
“We always planned on giving ourselves two weeks to get healthy and also giving ourselves two weeks to prep for Mercer,” added Plough. “The extra time is good, and we can work on our game prep this week before doing it for real the following week.”
Scheduled around the scrimmage the Aggies went through their entire pregame and halftime routine, knocking the rust off for the returning Aggies while introducing the new Ags to game day.
UC Davis football returns a large collection of talent from its historic 2024 squad that finished ranked No. 5 in the nation after going 11-3. Up front the Aggies bring back the entire starting offensive line to go along with a deep tight end and wide receiver room. While in the backfield, Jordan Fisher, Carter Vargas and Matteo Perez bring with them experience into a deep room.
On the defensive side of the ball, preseason All-American Rex Connors leads a mixed bunch of returning Big Sky All-Conference honorees and incoming talented player that includes preseason All-American transfer Jacob Psyk (Harvard) and California transfer Nate Rutchena.
UC Davis football opens 2025 on Aug. 23 in Montgomery, Ala., when they face No. 12 Mercer in the 2025 FCS Kickoff Classic. That game is set to kickoff at 4 p.m. PT and will be aired on ESPN. The Aggies open UC Davis Health Stadium on Sept. 20 when Southern Utah visits Davis for a 7 p.m. kick.
