Sactown Sports’ Matt George and Kayla Anderson spent The Matt & Kayla Show breaking down why it’s so important for the Sacramento Kings to stay inside the top six of the 2026 NBA Draft after losing a coin-flip tiebreaker to Utah this week.

That result locked Sacramento into the 5th-best lottery odds, with an 11.5% chance at No. 1 overall and a 45.2% chance to land in the top four.

That’s where things get especially important for the Sacramento Kings, because the difference between staying in the top four or sliding to five or worse could completely reshape the direction of the franchise.

A top-four pick would put Sacramento in a position to target elite-tier prospects at the very top of the board, while even staying at five keeps them in the mix, but with less certainty of landing a true franchise cornerstone.

George and Anderson noted that the Kings could realistically be in range of several high-end prospects depending on how the lottery shakes out, including Kansas standout Darryn Peterson, along with names like Duke’s Cameron Boozer, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, North Carolina big man Caleb Wilson, and Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr.

That cluster at the top of the draft is viewed as a clear tier break, which is why both hosts emphasized how crucial it is for Sacramento to avoid slipping outside that group and losing access to the very best talent in the class.

George opened the segment with frustration mixed with humor, saying it was “an L, the Kings have lost already. An L, to start the off-season,” as he reacted to Utah winning the tiebreak scenario.

Despite the emotion, George emphasized that the outcome didn’t really change the Kings’ core situation. He pointed out that “what we’re all hoping for, nothing changed from the coin flip yesterday,” explaining that Sacramento and Utah still share identical odds of reaching the top four.

The real shift, he noted, is not the ceiling but the floor of outcomes.

He broke down how unpredictable the lottery structure is, adding that “the Kings actually have now just a 2% chance” at the fifth pick because of how often teams jump around the board.

That unpredictability, he explained, is what makes the middle lottery range so volatile year to year.

George also tried to put fan anxiety into perspective, comparing the situation to poker and describing the 7th pick as the worst possible middle ground.

“It’s the bubble in a poker tournament. It’s the worst position that sucks. You’d rather be eliminated first, to be honest with you,” he said, emphasizing how painful that range can feel without guaranteeing a true star.

Even with that concern, both hosts stressed that the Sacramento Kings are still in a flexible position.

“It’s still very much a coin flip for the Kings,” George pointed out that Sacramento is statistically more likely to land in the top four or slide into the 6–8 range than to stay exactly at five.
