George Kittle Optimistic About Achilles Recovery, Eyes Early 2026 Return

George Kittle says he’s ahead of schedule in his Achilles rehab after surgery, with the 49ers hopeful he could return early in the 2026 season.

San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle offered an encouraging update on his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, saying his rehab is ahead of schedule and setting the stage for a potential return early in the 2026 NFL season.

Kittle suffered the injury during the 49ers’ playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on January 11. The 32-year-old tore his right Achilles tendon, an injury that typically carries a lengthy recovery timeline, especially for players whose game depends heavily on explosiveness and blocking strength.

Now roughly three months removed from surgery, Kittle says the process has been going as well as he could have hoped.

“Oh, first off, happy to be here. Achilles is doing great,” Kittle said while speaking with CNBC’s Alex Sherman. “We’re 13 weeks out of surgery. I think I’m ahead of schedule. My surgeon is super happy with it. So we’re on track to play a lot of football next season.”

The update marks another positive sign for the 49ers, who have built much of their offensive identity around Kittle’s versatility as both an elite pass catcher and a dominant run blocker.

Few tight ends in the league have matched his combination of physicality, durability, and postseason impact — even as this latest injury temporarily slowed him.

More on George Kittle’s rehab

George Kittle stopped short of guaranteeing a return by training camp, acknowledging that caution remains a priority as he continues rehab.

“Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. You know, we’ll dip our toes back in a little bit slower than that,” Kittle said. “But hey, who knows? Miracles have happened.”

That measured optimism aligns with how the 49ers’ front office is approaching Kittle’s recovery. During the 2026 NFL Draft, general manager John Lynch echoed confidence without placing a firm deadline on the tight end’s return.

“He’s going to be ready at some point, if not for the first game,” Lynch told the NFL Network during the NFL Draft Saturday.

For San Francisco, the possibility of Kittle returning early in the 2026 campaign could have significant implications.

The veteran remains one of the emotional leaders of the locker room and a central figure in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Even with younger weapons emerging, Kittle’s presence changes how defenses align and opens opportunities across the field.

Achilles injuries have historically posed challenges for NFL players, but recent advancements in surgical techniques and rehab protocols have improved outcomes.

Kittle’s comments suggest his medical team is pleased with both the structural healing and his functional progress — an important early indicator for a skill-position player.

As the offseason progresses, the 49ers are expected to remain conservative with Kittle’s workload, prioritizing long-term availability over short-term optimism. Still, his own confidence — paired with public backing from team leadership — paints an encouraging picture.

For now, George Kittle isn’t promising a return date. But if his recovery stays on track, the All-Pro tight end appears well-positioned to rejoin the 49ers sooner rather than later.
