Faithful Flashbacks #35: Signing Deion Sanders

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 35 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the 49ers signing Deion Sanders for the 1994 season.

San Francisco was already one of the NFL’s best teams, but the previous two seasons had ended at the same frustrating spot. The 49ers had reached the NFC Championship Game in 1992 and 1993, losing to the Cowboys both times while Dallas went on to win the Super Bowl. In need of help to overcome that hump, the 49ers added Sanders in free agency.

Before arriving in San Francisco, Sanders had already become one of the league’s most recognizable players with Atlanta. His personality was part of the story, but he was there to do more than sell tickets and jerseys. He was one of football’s best corners, a return threat, and a rare athlete.

The 49ers signed him to a one-year deal in 1994, adding him to a roster that was built to compete. It was never supposed to be a long-term partnership. Sanders came to San Francisco to win a Super Bowl, and the 49ers proved correct in that logic.

Sanders gave the 49ers the type of cornerback they needed against the league’s top receivers, and his playmaking showed up quickly. He finished the season with six interceptions, returned three of them for touchdowns, and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

More importantly, San Francisco finally got past Dallas in the NFC Championship Game, ending the Cowboys’ run and putting the 49ers back in the Super Bowl. They went on to beat the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, giving the franchise its fifth championship.

Sanders only played one season with the 49ers, which was polarizing in its own right. He was not there long enough to become a long-term face of the organization, but his impact was immediate and obvious.

For his lone season in red and gold, Deion Sanders accomplished what he was brought in to do.
