In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 37 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Raheem Mostert turning the NFC Championship Game into the best performance of his career.

The stat line itself is ridiculous to look at, even in hindsight. Mostert ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns against the Packers, becoming the only player in NFL history to ever rush for at least 200 yards and four touchdowns in a playoff game. To have that type of performance in one of the biggest games of his life only adds to the impressiveness of the feat.

Mostert was not a traditional star running back story leading up to that point. Before becoming a key piece of the 49ers offense, he had spent time with several teams and even in 2019, San Francisco did not enter the year with him as the lead of their run game.

Kyle Shanahan’s offense had several backs involved, and the 49ers spread carries around depending on matchups and availability. Mostert kept earning more work as the season went on, bringing the type of speed and burst that fit perfectly with what San Francisco wanted to do.

By the time the playoffs arrived, the 49ers were 13-3, had one of the league’s best defenses, and were fully capable of winning without needing Jimmy Garoppolo to carry the offense every week. Their run game, led by Mostert, was a key piece of that reality, and it was never more obvious than their showing against Green Bay.

Mostert’s first touchdown came in the first quarter and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Packers never really found a way to get him under control, and San Francisco kept going back to what him. Garoppolo attempted only eight passes, which spoke to how the game was unfolding.

Mostert finished with 29 carries, 220 yards, and four touchdowns in the 49ers’ 37-20 win. The performance sent San Francisco to Super Bowl LIV and gave Mostert a place in playoff history that is still unique.

For a player whose NFL career had been anything but direct, the moment captured how quickly a role can change in the right situation. Mostert had more than just a big game; it was a historic output deserving of the headlines of the NFC Championship Game, and it helped power the 49ers back to the Super Bowl.
