In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 34 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the 49ers moving to Candlestick Park.

The move became official for the 1971 NFL season, with San Francisco playing its first regular-season game at Candlestick on Oct. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams. At the time, it was simply the franchise’s new home but it grew to become a memorable piece of their team’s history.

Before Candlestick, the 49ers spent their early years at Kezar Stadium. That was where the franchise started, where it built its first real connection with the city, and where generations of fans first watched professional football in San Francisco. By the 1970s, the 49ers were ready to move on from Kezar, though.

The move came as San Francisco had just won its first division title in 1970 and was beginning one of the franchise’s better stretches before the Bill Walsh era. No longer trying to establish themselves, they had become an established force. They were a threatening playoff team with John Brodie at quarterback, Dick Nolan as head coach, and a roster that had put the franchise in a stronger position in the NFC.

Candlestick didn’t see championships right away, but it quickly became tied to higher expectations. The 49ers won another NFC West title in their first season there and reached the NFC Championship Game for a second straight year. Attaching meaningful games to a new building helped create a memorable environment and welcome their new home.

The many successes that came later are well known. Candlestick became the home of “The Catch,” the early Walsh-Montana years, multiple Super Bowl teams, and plenty more critical moments in franchise history that have been featured on our countdown. It was not always comfortable being right by the ocean, and it was never considered a perfect stadium, but that became part of how people remembered it.

The 49ers’ move to Candlestick Park signified the beginning of a new era. It put the franchise in the building that would eventually become tied to its rise, its dynasty years, and a large part of what fans still picture when they think about old 49ers football.
