San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak is focused on one thing as training camp gets underway: getting San Francisco’s offense back to playing fast, physical and explosive football.
Speaking with reporters after the opening practices of camp, Kubiak said the offense has started on the right foot despite head coach Kyle Shanahan taking a reduced on-field role while recovering from injuries suffered in a recent car accident.
“Our guys have come out and had the right mindset,” Kubiak said. “Our tempo has been awesome, and practices have been really good. Just have to keep going one day at a time.”
One of the biggest priorities entering the 2026 season is restoring the explosiveness that disappeared during stretches of last year. Kubiak admitted the offense “fell off” in that area and said the front office addressed it by adding more speed at running back and wide receiver.
“We were lacking in that last year,” Kubiak said. “We’re always trying to add more speed, more explosiveness to our offense every year.”

However, Kubiak stressed that explosive plays are earned through better execution rather than simply adding faster players.
“When you run the ball better, there’s more opportunities for play action explosives,” he said. “It’s a collective effort.”
The wide receiver room has also caught Kubiak’s attention early in camp. Veteran addition Mike Evans has raised the level of competition, while several returning players have taken noticeable steps forward.
“That whole room has taken a big step from last year to this year,” Kubiak said. “There’s continuity. Those guys come out every day with the right mindset. They’re on their assignments, they’re working, they’re competing.”
Kubiak also praised the offseason work quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Mac Jones put in with several receivers, saying the extra time together built chemistry that should pay dividends throughout the season.
The offensive coordinator highlighted Jordan Watkins as one player who has shown clear improvement after an injury-filled rookie campaign.
“Jordan’s taken a step,” Kubiak said. “The work with Brock over the summer for all those guys was huge.”

Kubiak also addressed Shanahan’s absence from portions of practice, crediting the head coach for building a culture that allows the coaching staff to keep operations running smoothly.
“Kyle’s an outstanding leader, an outstanding mentor,” Kubiak said. “He’s enabled people to lead. He’s enabled me. He’s enabled our whole staff to just take on our jobs and lead in our own way.”
While Shanahan remains involved behind the scenes, Kubiak said the coaches are determined to reassure their head coach that everything is under control.
“Our job is to reassure Kyle that we’re very confident in the work we’re doing,” Kubiak said. “Everyone’s stepping up and just doing what we normally do, and taking care of our business.”
