Report: Kings weighing Westbrook return, Oladipo possibility

The Sacramento Kings remain active in their search for a veteran point guard, and two familiar names have reportedly emerged as potential options.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Sacramento is looking to add an experienced floor general capable of mentoring prized rookie and recent seventh-overall pick Darius Acuff Jr.

Fischer reports that the Kings are weighing the possibility of bringing back Russell Westbrook or signing former All-Star Victor Oladipo.

“League sources say that Sacramento covets a veteran point guard to mentor prized rookie Darius Acuff Jr. and is thus now weighing the prospect of bringing back Russell Westbrook or bringing in Victor Oladipo to fill that role,” Fischer wrote, adding that the Kings were among the teams in attendance for Oladipo’s recent workout in Las Vegas during Summer League.

A reunion with Russell Westbrook would make plenty of sense after the 37-year-old revitalized his career in Sacramento during the 2025-26 season.

After signing a veteran minimum contract just days before opening night, Westbrook initially began the season backing up Dennis Schroder. It didn’t take long for the former MVP to earn a larger role, eventually overtaking Schroder as Sacramento’s starting point guard.

Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 42 percent from the field and just under 34 percent from three across 64 games, including 58 starts. His scoring, rebounding, and assist averages were all his highest since the 2022-23 campaign, while his six triple-doubles marked his most since his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021-22.

Both Westbrook and Kings general manager Scott Perry expressed interest earlier this offseason in a potential reunion if circumstances aligned.

However, Sacramento remains financially limited, with another veteran minimum contract likely representing the most the organization could offer.

If a reunion with Westbrook doesn’t materialize, Oladipo presents an intriguing alternative.

The 34-year-old, selected second overall in the 2013 NBA Draft and a two-time NBA All-Star, has been working toward an NBA comeback after devastating injuries derailed his career.

A ruptured right quad tendon in 2019 and a devastating torn left patellar tendon injury in 2023 have kept him out of the league following the 2022-23 season.

Oladipo appeared in 11 games for the Wisconsin Herd during the 2025-26 G League season, averaging 14.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 40 percent from the floor and 31 percent from beyond the arc.

Whether it’s a familiar face in Westbrook or an inspiring comeback story in Oladipo, Fischer’s report indicates Sacramento’s front office remains focused on adding a veteran presence to help guide Acuff as the franchise’s point guard of the future.

For now, the Kings have Acuff, Malik Monk, and second-year wing Nique Clifford as options at the point guard spot. We’ll see if Perry decides to add one of these two former All-Stars into the fold for 2026-27 with training camp set to begin at the end of September.
