Should the Sacramento Kings have done more this offseason?

The Sacramento Kings made a handful of moves this offseason, but many around the NBA expected general manager Scott Perry to be far more aggressive.

Instead, Sacramento waived DeMar DeRozan, re-signed forward Precious Achiuwa, and selected Darius Acuff Jr. with the 7th overall pick in the NBA Draft. Star guard Zach LaVine also picked up his $49 million option for 2026-27.

With the roster largely intact otherwise, Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys questioned whether Perry could eventually regret standing pat.

Kevin Gleason doesn’t believe that’s the case.

“I don’t think they had a lot of [options],” Gleason said while discussing Sacramento’s offseason approach. Rather than making moves simply to improve their win total, he believes the Kings are focused on evaluating what they already have.

“They’re going to do what they can, but if a trade comes along that makes sense, they’re going to be committed to developing,” Gleason said. “They’re not going to make a move to stay out of relegation.”

Allen Stiles agreed, arguing the Kings shouldn’t sacrifice future assets just to chase a few extra victories.

“Vegas thinks we’re winning 21 and a half games,” Stiles said. “It’s our job to prove them wrong, but we’re not going to give up any type of capital to make this team just good enough.”

The discussion eventually shifted to Domantas Sabonis, whose future continues to be one of the biggest storylines surrounding Sacramento. Sabonis was heavily mentioned in trade rumors early in the offseason, but is now expected to remain in Sacramento–at least to begin the season.

Sabonis, 30, has two years and around $90 million remaining on his contract.

Despite Sabonis remaining arguably the Kings’ best player, Gleason acknowledged the franchise appears to be thinking beyond the immediate future.

“They don’t really seem to want him,” Gleason said, noting the disconnect between Sabonis’ talent and Sacramento’s long-term plans.

Rather than forcing a trade, Stiles believes Perry has wisely paused the situation after reportedly exploring Sabonis’ market earlier this summer.

“If it makes sense right now, then we’re going to do it,” Stiles explained of Perry’s philosophy. “If the market has crashed a little bit, then I just hold on to it because he is a good player.”

For now, the Kings appear comfortable entering training camp with Sabonis still on the roster while allowing Acuff to develop and Achiuwa to strengthen the frontcourt rotation.

Whether that patience proves to be the right approach remains to be seen, but if Sacramento struggles early in the season, questions about whether Scott Perry should have done more this offseason are likely to grow even louder.
