Would Russell Westbrook be the perfect mentor for Darius Acuff Jr.?

The Sacramento Kings’ reported pursuit of a veteran point guard has sparked plenty of debate, and Russell Westbrook remains at the center of the conversation.

After NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Sacramento is weighing a reunion with Westbrook or potentially signing Victor Oladipo to mentor rookie Darius Acuff Jr., Sactown Sports’ The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross discussed what that role should actually look like–and whether Westbrook is the right fit.

While neither host dismissed Fischer’s report, both admitted it caught them by surprise given how the Kings’ offseason had unfolded.

“It just does sound off-brand,” Carmichael Dave said, noting that Sacramento previously appeared comfortable entering the season with Acuff backed up by players already on the roster.

Still, the report led to a larger discussion about leadership. With eight players on the roster aged 25 or younger, Dave questioned who would serve as the veteran voice when adversity inevitably hits during a rebuilding season.

“I think that maybe is a little bit of where this is coming from,” Dave said. “Who’s going to be that guy this year for Darius Acuff?”

That question makes Russell Westbrook an intriguing candidate.

The 37-year-old enjoyed a resurgent 2025-26 campaign after signing with Sacramento on a veteran minimum deal just before opening night.

Originally expected to back up Dennis Schroder, Westbrook earned the starting job and averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.3 steals over 64 games. He also recorded six triple-doubles, his highest total since the 2021-22 season.

Jason Ross, however, wondered whether Westbrook’s greatest strength could also complicate the situation.

“I think Russ still thinks he’s closer to that player,” Ross said. “That’s a hard thing to shut off.” He added that if Sacramento wants a reserve whose primary responsibility is mentoring Acuff, “they need to define what they want in that position.”

Dave echoed that concern, pointing out that Westbrook won the starting job last season because of his relentless competitiveness.

“There’s literally zero chance of Russell Westbrook winning the starting job this year over Darius Acuff,” Dave said. “Can he allow himself legit to sacrifice for this kid?”

The hosts also acknowledged the other side of the argument. Westbrook is already respected throughout the league, familiar with Sacramento’s coaching staff and locker room, and has consistently been praised for his professionalism.

Meanwhile, Oladipo offers a different type of veteran presence as he continues working toward an NBA comeback after multiple devastating knee injuries.

Ultimately, both hosts agreed on one thing: regardless of whether it’s Russell Westbrook, Victor Oladipo, or another veteran, the Kings would benefit from adding an experienced point guard capable of helping Acuff navigate the mental and physical challenges of his rookie season.
