Jerry Reynolds Names His Favorite Free Agent Linked To Kings
Sacramento Kings legend Jerry Reynolds told The Drive Guys his favorite of the free agent guards the Kings have been linked to.

The Sacramento Kings are currently dealing with essentially no financial flexibility, despite projecting as one of the bottom teams in the Western Conference next season.
It’s not a great sell to free agents, but general manager Scott Perry still has open roster spots to fill. With 13 rostered players and two two-way deals, Sacramento has two more open roster spots and three additional camp invites he can extend beyond that.
Incoming lottery pick Darius Acuff Jr. is the only true point guard on the roster currently. Russell Westbrook filled in last year, but decided to retire instead of returning for one more season.
Recent reporting from various sources has linked the Kings to Cameron Payne, Elfrid Payton, and Victor Oladipo. Jerry Reynolds, former Kings general manager, head coach, and broadcaster, joined The Drive Guys to give his two cents on the players they’ve been linked to.
“Clearly they feel like they need somebody with NBA experience to play behind Acuff,” Reynolds said. “I think Cam Payne probably is the best of the three. Considering he’s actually played some level of NBA basketball recently.”
Payne played 22 games for the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 7.4 points and 2.6 assists in 17 minutes a night. The year prior, 78 games with three different teams. At 32 years old, the final pick of the 2015 NBA Draft lottery is fighting to remain in the league.
Payton, another former lottery pick, was in the G-League with the Austin Spurs. He posted 6.3 points, 6.0 assists, and 5.8 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per night. He and Payne both fit the mold of a traditional point guard, something Perry and head coach Doug Christie have spoken highly of, given the scoring they already have on the roster.
Reynolds believes a theme between the rumored options it that none of them present any internal competition.
“I don’t think you have to worry about [Payne] beating out Acuff,” he said. “Certainly he’s got to be well aware that he’s not going to be a starter, and he can shoot.”
While the rebounding and size favor Payton, he’s a career 28.6% three-point shooter compared to Payne’s 36.6 percent. Oladipo is completely different in his own right as a former All-Star, fighting to return to the league post-injuries. He has not played in an NBA game since April 2023.
None of those three options are under 32. “Why not see if we can’t get John Stockton out of retirement?” Reynolds joked. “See what he’s got left.”
